Congratulations. By visiting this site, you have made the first move to help parents and children understand the exciting opportunities and important responsibilities involved in using the Internet.

The DMA created Get CyberSavvy! as a public-service educational resource for families. This section of the program has been developed for educators and librarians. It includes an overview of the materials in the Parents and Children's sections of Get CyberSavvy! plus easy-to-use strategies for presenting the materials to your audiences.

You may be very familiar with the Internet, or just starting to explore it. In either case, parents and children depend on you to be their coach on the Internet learning curve. Here you'll find all the information you need to:

  • plan a Get CyberSavvy! workshop or meeting to introduce parents and children to the new computer Internet technology

  • explain the flow of information on the Internet and why it is important for families to make decisions that let them use the Internet in ways that protect their privacy and well-being

  • take parents or children on a tour of the Internet, either by describing basic Internet activities or using computers to demonstrate them

  • answer questions or address concerns parents may have about the Internet

  • encourage families to develop a Family CyberSavvy Pledge about internet access and use

  • recommend Internet resources to parents and children

Every day more classrooms and libraries are going online. Millions of children are using the Internet to:

  • visit other cities and countries, museums, national parks and historical sites

  • build new reading, writing, math and art skills

  • make new friends around the world

  • look up important facts about history, health, sports, music, space and the environment

These children need to Get CyberSavvy! Their parents do too. You can be their guide on a remarkable Information Age adventure.
